The Oregon Brain Injury Resource Network

The Oregon Brain Injury Resource Network (ORBIRN) is an information and support system created to begin meeting the needs of Oregon families experiencing brain injury and the providers that assist them. The ORBIRN offers multiple supports to individuals and families experiencing brain injury. These include local support groups, a peer-to-peer mentor programs , and a professional support program called Neuro-Resource Facilitation.

Additionally, ORBIRN supports Oregon’s service providers and community organizations. They can receive training and technical assistance on supporting individuals and families experiencing brain injury. Providers can request case specific assistance, a variety of brain injury educational forums and trainings, and public awareness presentations.

Support Groups

On a local level, members meet together monthly to share experiences and information on an informal basis. Most groups function as support-giving entities to individuals with brain injury and to their families. We have support groups active in several communities throughout Oregon .

Many of these area support groups have more than one support group; for instance, one for survivors, one for families, and one for recreational activities. Benefits of participating in a local support group meeting include presentations by specialty speakers, referrals to local resources, and emotional support from others in similar circumstances.

Brain Injury Specialist Training and Certification

There are currently 4 Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and 1 Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainers (CBIST) in Oregon. The Brain Injury Alliance of Oregon offers training events twice annually, and by special request. If you or your organization are interested in learning more about these events, please contact us at 1-800-544-5243 or [email protected] . Training is open to all individuals, regardless of their interest or eligibility to sit for the certification examination.

The Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) offers a voluntary national certification program for both entry-level staff and experienced professionals working in brain injury services. ACBIS provides staff and professionals the opportunity to learn important information about brain injury, to demonstrate their learning in a written examination, and to earn a nationally recognized credential.

ACBIS offers two certification options representing distinct levels of experience and supervisory skills: Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer* (CBIST). Certification is based on a comprehensive training manual that covers the following topics:

  • Brain anatomy and brain-behavior relationships
  • Functional impact of brain injury
  • Effective treatment approaches
  • Children and adolescents with brain injury
  • Health and medical management
  • Family issues
  • Legal and ethical issues

Certification is not restricted to any one profession or discipline. Rather, it is intended for anyone who delivers services specific to brain injury.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Oregon offers this training to all individuals interested in registering, regardless of the participants qualifications for, or interest in, taking the examination to be a CBIS, however participation in the training alone does not qualify the participant to use the CBIS credentials.
